The Break in the CARP Rods

How are made, why they are broken and how to fix the studs break temporarily.

Both campsites organised or wild, as in the most demanding mountain land, the tents can be whipped by intense winds that endanger the integrity of the rods which hold them and shape. So it is not strange to see that many of them end up broken or cracked, even despite being new, what complicates, of not having a spare hand or carrying out a repair to the pass, the subsequent use of the store.

The rods are made in two types of materials, fiberglass and aluminum, although the latter are used in those tents for high mountains, where the climate is extreme. Fiber are on the other hand, used in most of the tents and for all kinds of purposes, although here comes to play the quality with which are built, which is linked to its resistance and service life.

To make a rod good it is necessary that the fiberglass is in good quantity and well distributed over the entire length, and that the resin that baña solidifying the two materials in one, is of good quality. But what normally with more affordable clothing? As the fiber is more expensive, many manufacturers lower cost by reducing its amount and putting more resin, which gives a false sense of having solid rods: If the chosen camping area gets storms and strong winds, most likely breaking for the effort.

However, although quality materials are used in its manufacture can happen that the manufacturing process is incorrect: mal-distribution of materials or incorrect proportions, and not appropriate humidity and temperature conditions. Then, the rods will suffer breakage or weakening that will put at risk the stability of the tent – and the safety of its occupants – at a time.

To be sure to buy a tent with a proper linkage, you must first define where the store will be used mostly. So make sure you buy one is appropriate to the terrain and climate. But we must also check that the studs have a minimum diameter of 8 mm, being that to the 9.40 are recommended for carps up to 1.50 m in height. Up to 10,40 mm diameter can be used in tents of up to 2 m high, and for other larger 10.5 mm thick rods are recommend.

Another key issue in the carpa-varilla equation, is the system of Assembly. Most of the tents have sleeves that are introduced the studs, although other models combine sleeves with clips or with these hooks only. Stores with sleeves have a better performance in windy conditions, since rods distributes his work on the entire surface of contact with the fabric. The hooks are quick Assembly but not recommended for areas where air currents are regular and intense, since they do not have the stability of the former.

Repair to step

If we have the bad luck that a rod break, to get out of trouble always should have a roll of packing tape type silver tape (more resistant). But if break occurred just in the metal Plug and became a piece of Rod inside, it is best, with a lighter, heat the metal to melt and fall. The remaining end is cut neat and plugs: that stretch will be short but at least the rod was recovered. Anyway, the most advisable is to always carry a couple of stretches of the same length and spare.
